One price for the whole house

Charging per person makes sense for a company and none at all for a family. The reasoning I actually used, and where the money goes.

Almost every app you can name charges per seat. It's the default because it explains well to an investor. More users, more revenue, a chart pointing the right way.

For software a company buys, that's roughly fair. Each extra person really does get their own value out of it.

A household works differently

The second adult in your house is the same customer as the first. Same grocery list, different phone.

Per-seat pricing also punishes the exact thing that makes the app worth having. A list only one person keeps is a note to yourself, and it's fine, but it isn't why any of this exists. The whole point is the other people in the house being on it too. Charging for the second person means charging you extra for the feature working.

I've been on the receiving end of that and never once enjoyed it.

So one payer, one household

One person subscribes and the accounts come with it. Free covers one account. Plus covers two, Premium covers four.

An included account is a real account. Its own login, its own things in it, sitting on your plan. Worth saying plainly, because on most services what you get for sharing is a profile inside somebody else's account, and a profile doesn't make you your own person in the app.

Where the money actually goes

The costs that grow with a customer are voice commands and sync storage. Neither one grows with how many people share a plan. They grow with how much anybody talks to it, which is why the voice allowance is a stated number rather than a shrug.

Same reason the accounts are free and the talking is capped. I charge for what costs me something.

Annual is 20 percent off

Plus is $5.99 a month or $57.50 for the year, which comes to $4.79 a month. Premium is $14.99 a month or $143.90.

Twelve months of Plus at the monthly rate is $71.88, so the year price saves you twenty percent, and Premium works out the same way against its $179.88. No countdown timer on it, and no lifetime deal that shows up for one weekend then comes back the next weekend wearing a hat.

Collecting once instead of twelve times costs me less, and I'd rather hand that back than spend it on a banner telling you to hurry.
