The goal, written down in public

I want Buhata to be the app a household opens first. Saying it out loud so I've got to keep looking at it after launch, not only before.

This one's for me as much as for you. I fully expect to come back and read it in a year to find out how much of it I meant.

The goal is for Buhata to be the app a household opens first. Where the groceries live, and the bills, and who's collecting whom on Thursday, and the thing somebody remembers about the dog's shots.

It isn't that yet. It launches in days and there's a lot of growing left in it. I'm saying it out loud because a goal you've announced is harder to wander away from than one you keep in your head, and I've wandered away from things in my head before. I stopped painting for fourteen years that way.

What I actually mean by it

Households are badly served by productivity software. Most of it got built for offices and then had a family-shaped sticker put on the box. That's why so much of it charges per person, which makes no sense at all for people who live together and are reading the same list.

So the target is narrow on purpose. Not the biggest app. The one a family finds obvious.

What I'm not promising

I won't tell you Buhata already does everything, because it doesn't, and you'd work that out in about ten minutes.

I won't promise dates for features I haven't started. I've read enough roadmaps that turned into apologies.

And I won't grow this by making the free plan worse until you give up and pay. If you ever catch me doing that, the goal was a lie and you should say so publicly.

Why I care about it more than I expected to

There are people whose livelihood is attached to this now. Mine, my family's, and the people working with me. I mention it because it explains a lot of my decisions, including some that look inefficient from outside.

Somebody subscribing isn't a number on a dashboard I check once a week. It's rent, and a laptop, and somebody on my team getting paid on time. That's behind me answering support myself, reading every bug report, and preferring to ship a small thing that works over a big thing that mostly does.

I know how that reads. Every company says it. Mine you can test, because I'm small enough that you'll actually reach me.

Come back and check

This article has a date on it. Hold me to it.

If Buhata is worse in a year, or slower, or quietly more expensive, this is the post to quote at me. I'd rather be embarrassed in public than drift.
