Advent calendar

A calendar that counts down the days to Christmas, with a door, pocket or small treat to open for each day.

What It Means

An Advent calendar counts down the days to Christmas, usually with a small door, pocket or gift for each day. It takes its name from Advent, the church season before Christmas, which the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) begins on the Sunday nearest November 30. In 2026 that Sunday is November 29, so a calendar that follows the season has 26 days to open through December 24, and one that starts on December 1 has 24.

Try It: Count the Doors and Budget the Fillings

Pick when your calendar starts, then set an example amount for each door. The total updates as you go.

Filling one for a child under 3? Every item needs to be free of small parts. See the CPSC rules below.

How People Say It

  • "Can I open today's door yet?"
  • "We do one small activity a day instead of chocolate."
  • "Who opened tomorrow's door?"

The Breakdown

How to plan one

  1. Pick the start. December 1 gives 24 doors. Following the church season in 2026 means starting on Sunday, November 29, and filling 26.
  2. Decide what goes behind each door: a picture, a verse, a small treat or something to do together.
  3. Set an amount per door, then multiply by the number of doors and the number of calendars.
  4. If a child under 3 will open it, check every item against the CPSC small-parts rules.
  5. Fill it and hang it before the first day.

Worked example. Two children, 24 doors each, $2 a door: 48 doors and $96 for the season. Starting on November 29 instead makes it 52 doors and $104.

Where It Comes From

Britannica traces the Advent calendar to 19th-century Germany, where Protestant families marked the days before Christmas in several ways: lighting a candle, adding a straw to a Nativity crib, chalking marks on a wall or door, or hanging up a religious picture. Printed calendars appeared early in the 20th century. Credit for the little doors usually goes to Gerhard Lang, a German publisher, who added them in the 1920s with a picture behind each one, and other publishers later put Bible verses behind them. Lang is said to have taken the idea from his mother, who sewed 24 cookies or 24 pictures onto cardboard, depending on the account, and let him have one each day.

Good to Know

The CPSC bans products meant for children under 3 if they have small parts a child could choke on, inhale or swallow. Its test is a small parts cylinder built to approximate how wide a young child's throat can open, and anything that fits all the way inside counts as a small part. When a toy for older children includes small parts, marbles, small balls or latex balloons, its label has to warn buyers which younger ages it isn't for. Read those warnings on anything you buy loose to fill a calendar.

FAQ

When does Advent start in 2026?

On Sunday, November 29, 2026. The USCCB counts Advent from the Sunday nearest November 30, which can be that date itself.

Who invented the Advent calendar?

No single person. Britannica traces it to 19th-century German countdown customs, with printed calendars arriving in the early 20th century and the publisher Gerhard Lang credited with adding the doors in the 1920s.

Are toy-filled Advent calendars safe for toddlers?

Only if every item is free of small parts. The CPSC bans small parts in products meant for children under 3, and toys for older children that contain them carry a choking hazard warning, so check each item's label.
