What It Means
The available balance is the amount in a bank account that the bank counts as yours to use right now. It starts from the account balanceAccount balanceThe money in a bank account once posted deposits and payments are counted, also called the ledger balance; pending card purchases aren't subtracted yet. See more, the total after every posted transaction, and takes off card purchases that are approved but not yet settled. Any part of a recent deposit the bank is still holding until it clears is left out too. When nothing is pending or on hold, the two balances match.
Try It: Work Out an Available Balance From Its Holds
This account balance includes a $400 check deposited yesterday. Take out what's on hold and pending to find the available balance, then try the buttons. Example numbers.
When a pending purchase posts at the same amount, the available balance stays put and the account balance drops to meet it.
Below zero. Another purchase now could overdraw the account, depending on your bank's rules.
How It Sounds at Home
- "It says $764 available, but my balance is $1,250."
- "The gas station is still holding a hundred bucks."
- "Is that deposit available yet?"
The Breakdown
Worked example. Maria deposited a $400 check yesterday, and her account balance of $1,250 already includes it. Her bank made $100 of the check usable right away and is holding the other $300 until it clears. She also has two card purchases waiting to settle.
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Account balance | $1,250 |
| Part of yesterday's check still on hold | minus $300 |
| Gas station hold, pending | minus $100 |
| Grocery purchase, pending | minus $86 |
| Available balance | $764 |
Two days later the gas station sends its real total of $52, the hold shrinks to match, and her available balance rises to $812.
What the result means. For a purchase today, the available balance is the better guide, since it already counts what's pending. It still can't see a check you wrote that hasn't been cashed or a bill set to autopay tomorrow, so take those off yourself.
Why the two numbers differ
- A card purchase is approved at once but settles later, so it sits as pending in between.
- Some merchants, such as gas stations and hotels, may authorize more than the final amount.
- A deposited check can be held until it clears, under your bank's funds availability policy.
Good to Know
Each bank's own rules decide how its available balance is worked out, and the details differ. The CFPB's 2021 overdraftOverdraftWhen a payment is bigger than your checking balance and the bank pays it anyway, leaving a negative balance you owe back, usually plus a fee. See more report describes it as the ledger balance plus any deposits the bank has made available before they clear, minus debits that are authorized but not yet settled, while FDIC guidance from 2023 puts it as the ledger balance minus holds for uncleared deposits and pending debit card purchases. According to the CFPB's 2021 overdraft report, some banks decide overdraft and NSF fees on the available balance and others on the ledger balance, so check your deposit account agreement to see which yours uses. For check holds, your bank's funds availability policy says when deposited money becomes usable, and HelpWithMyBank.gov, run by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, answers common questions about them.
FAQ
Why is my available balance lower than my account balance?
Pending card purchases and deposits still on hold come off the available balance right away, while the account balance waits until they post. Some merchants, such as gas stations and hotels, may authorize more than the final amount, which widens the gap until the real total arrives.
Which balance should I use when I spend?
The available balance, after you take off anything it can't see yet, such as checks that haven't been cashed and bills scheduled to autopay. What's left is the closest figure to money that's free to spend.
Can my available balance change without me doing anything?
Yes. It rises when a deposit hold ends or a pending hold drops to the final amount, and it falls when a scheduled payment or a new authorization comes through.
