Baby shower

A party held before a baby arrives where friends and family bring gifts for the baby and celebrate the parent or parents-to-be.

What It Means

A baby shower is a party held before a baby is born, where guests bring presents for the baby. Merriam-Webster and the Cambridge Dictionary both define it around the gifts given to the person expecting. Friends or relatives often host it, and the food, decorations and any games are the hosts' costs to plan.

Try It: Split the Shower's Cost Between Co-Hosts

Example costs. Change them and the number of people hosting.

Shower total$350
Each host's share$116.67
Per guest$14.00

Buffet food out at room temperature: 2 hours at most, or 1 hour above 90°F (FDA).

How People Say It

  • "Are you registered anywhere?"
  • "The shower's at my sister's on Saturday."
  • "We're doing a co-ed shower this time."

The Breakdown

Worked example. Three friends host a shower for 25 guests (example costs):

ItemCost
Food and drinks, 25 guests at $1010,000 stepsA popular daily step goal that began as the name of a 1960s Japanese pedometer; later studies find health benefits begin well below it. See more$250
Decorations$60
Game prizes and favors$40
Total$350
Each of 3 hosts$116.67

What the result means. Food is the line that grows with every name added, so the guest list does most of the work on the total. Agreeing on the total and the split before anyone buys keeps one host from quietly covering more than their share.

Keeping the buffet safe. A shower often runs a few hours, and FDA's buffet guidance gives the limits:

  • Hot dishes held at 140°F or warmer in a warmer, slow cooker or chafing dish
  • Cold dishes at 40°F or colder, set on ice if they stay out
  • Perishable food off the table after 2 hours, or after 1 hour above 90°F
  • Small platters swapped in through the party instead of one big tray

Planning the money. The CFPB's advice for seasonal spending works here: decide what the hosts can afford before booking anything, list each cost with an amount, and track spendingExpense trackingWriting down every purchase and bill as it happens, by category, so you can see where your money actually goes and compare it with your budget. See more as it happens.

Good to Know

Buhata's suggestion: ask the parent-to-be about the guest list and any food restrictions before invitations go out. The weeks around a birth can be hard: the National Maternal Mental Health Hotline, from HRSA, takes calls and texts at 1-833-TLC-MAMA (1-833-852-6262), and calls or texts to 988 reach the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. In an emergency, call 911.

FAQ

Who usually hosts a baby shower?

Friends or relatives of the parent-to-be often host. Co-hosts can split the costs, and the calculator shows each person's share.

How long can food sit out at a baby shower?

Two hours at room temperature, according to FDA's buffet guidance, or 1 hour when it's above 90°F. Keep hot dishes at 140°F or warmer and cold ones at 40°F or colder.

What's the difference between a baby shower and a gender reveal?

A baby shower centers on gifts for the baby, as the dictionary definitions put it. A gender reveal is an event to announce whether the baby is a boy or a girl.
