Baseboard cleaning

Dusting and wiping the trim where walls meet the floor. The American Cleaning Institute puts a wipe-down in fall cleaning and a vacuum before the holidays.

What It Means

Baseboard cleaning is removing the dust, pet hair and scuffs that collect on the trim running along the bottom of your walls. Baseboards sit right where dust settles and where vacuums and feet knock into them, so they dull quickly. The American Cleaning Institute (ACI) includes them in its seasonal and holiday cleaning lists and in any top-to-bottom clean of a room.

Run the vacuum's brush along them

Buhata's suggestion, on the day ACI says living spaces get vacuumed or swept.

How It Sounds at Home

  • "Look at the dust on these baseboards."
  • "The dog hair all ends up along the trim."
  • "I'll do the baseboards when I mop."

Make it last between cleanings. Work from the top of the room down, so dust from shelves and fans falls before you reach the baseboards, then do the floors last. A quick pass with the vacuum's dusting brush on floor day keeps grit from building into a gray line. Save the full wipe-down for the seasonal clean.

Buhata's suggestion for the wipe-down. Use a cloth dampened with plain water or a mild cleaner, wrung out well, and dry the trim as you go. Check the cleaner's label, and test anything new on a hidden spot first.

Good to Know

Use one cleaning product at a time and follow its label; never mix cleaners. Buhata's own caution for older homes: if the paint on the trim is peeling or chipping, check EPA's guidance on lead-based paint before you sand or scrape it.

FAQ

How often should you clean baseboards?

The American Cleaning Institute puts a wipe-down in its fall cleaning list and a vacuum in its holiday checklist, and includes baseboards in any top-to-bottom clean. A weekly pass with the vacuum brush is Buhata's own suggestion.

Should I clean baseboards before or after the floor?

Before. Cleaning top to bottom means dust falls onto a floor you haven't cleaned yet, so the floor comes last.

What's the easiest way to keep baseboards clean?

Buhata suggests running the vacuum's brush along them whenever you vacuum, which stops dust and hair from settling into a line that needs scrubbing later.
