Body doubling

Doing a task while another person is present, in the room or on a video call, so their company makes it easier to start and keep going.

What It Means

Body doubling is working on a task while another person is there with you, either in the same room or on a video call. The other person, the body double, doesn't help with your task; they're usually doing their own work. Their presence alone can make it easier to get started, stay on track and finish. Cleveland Clinic and CHADD write about it as an ADHDADHD in kidsAttention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in children: ongoing trouble paying attention, sitting still or controlling impulses, beyond what's usual for their age. See more strategy, and nothing about it requires a diagnosis to try.

Try It: Set Up a Body Doubling Session

Tick each part of your session as you set it up. The count shows how ready you are.

Keep going. The first three matter most: a task, a person and a time.

How People Say It

  • "Can you just sit with me while I do my taxes?"
  • "Jump on a call, I need a body double for this report."
  • "I only fold laundry when someone's in the room."

The Breakdown

How to do it

  1. Choose one task you've been putting off.
  2. Find a body double: a friend, partner, roommate or coworker who has their own work to do.
  3. Agree on a time and a length, such as 45 minutes or an hour.
  4. At the start, each say what you'll work on.
  5. Work side by side, in person or on video, with little or no talking.
  6. At the end, take a minute to say what you got done.

CHADD describes body doubling groups that chat at the start and now and then during the session, and notes there's no need to talk while you work unless you want to. Steps 3, 4 and 6 are Buhata's own suggestion.

Try it today. Text one person and ask if they'd work beside you for 30 minutes this week, each on your own thing.

Good to Know

Cleveland Clinic and CHADD describe body doubling as a practical way to get tasks done. If trouble starting and finishing tasks is constant and affects work, school or home, talk to a doctor about ADHD symptoms.

FAQ

What is a body double for ADHD?

A person who is present while you work on a task, in the room or by video. Cleveland Clinic says they don't need to help you; being there can make it easier to start, focus and finish.

Do you have to talk during body doubling?

No. CHADD notes there's no need to talk while you work unless you want to, and many groups chat only at the start and briefly during the session.

Can body doubling be done online?

Yes. Cleveland Clinic and CHADD both describe body doubling over video, with each person working in their own space.
