What It Means
BudgetBudgetA plan for a set period, usually a month, that lists the money you expect to receive and how you'll spend or save it. See more meals are dinners and other meals chosen and cooked to keep a household's food spending low. The working idea is to know the cost of a dish before you shop: add up what its ingredients cost and divide by the servings it makes. USDA's MyPlate budget guidance builds on the same idea, with planning ahead, comparing prices and using leftovers.
Try It: Price a Dinner per Serving and per Month
Enter what one dinner's ingredients cost and how many servings it makes. Example numbers; use your own receipt.
A month here is a year of weeks divided by 12. Breakfast, lunch and snacks come on top.
How It Sounds at Home
- "What can we make this week that's cheap?"
- "That soup came out to about two dollars a bowl."
- "Let's do beans and rice twice this week to stretch the budget."
The Breakdown
Worked example. A family of four prices one week of dinners from its receipts:
| Dinner | Ingredients | Servings | Per serving |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bean chili | $9.00 | 6 | $1.50 |
| Egg fried rice with frozen vegetables | $7.00 | 4 | $1.75 |
| Turkey tacos | $14.00 | 4 | $3.50 |
| Vegetable soup | $8.00 | 6 | $1.33 |
| Sheet-pan chicken and vegetables | $16.00 | 4 | $4.00 |
| Week | $54.00 |
The chili and soup make six servings, so two of those dinners leave leftovers for lunches. $54 a week of dinners is about $234 a month (54 × 52 ÷ 12).
What moves the number
- Protein choice. MyPlate names beans and eggs as low-cost protein foods.
- Frozen vegetables, which MyPlate lists as a low-cost option, spinach and green beans among them.
- Unit prices and store brands. MyPlate's budget tips include comparing unit prices and checkingChecking accountA bank or credit union account for everyday money going in and out, used by debit card, checks, transfers and direct deposit. See more sales on store brands.
- Planned leftovers. Cooking a bigger batch when you have time, such as soups, stews or casseroles, gives you a second meal.
Good to Know
USDA publishes the cost of four food plans every month, from the Thrifty Food Plan, the lowest, up through the Low-Cost, Moderate-Cost and Liberal plans, and adjusts them for inflationInflationA general rise in the prices of goods and services over time, so the same amount of money buys less than it did before. See more using the Consumer Price Index. For August 2026, USDA's Monthly Cost of Food Report puts the Thrifty Food Plan at $236.30 a week, or $1,023.70 a month, for its reference family of four: a man and a woman aged 20 to 50 and two children aged 6 to 8 and 9 to 11. That covers all meals and snacks made at home, and a household of a different size or age mix will cost a different amount, so check the full report for your family.

How much does USDA say a family of four spends on food?
USDA's Thrifty Food Plan, its lowest-cost plan, was $236.30 a week or $1,023.70 a month for its reference family of four in August 2026. USDA updates the figure every month.
