What It Means
Ceiling fan cleaning is removing the dust and grime that collect on a fan's blades, motor housing and light fixture. Hunter Fan, a ceiling fan maker, suggests dusting most fans every 1 to 3 months and giving them a deeper clean every 3 to 6 months, more often in a kitchen, with pets or when someone has allergies. Keeping blades evenly clean also matters for how the fan runs, because uneven dust can throw it off balance.

Hunter says kitchens, pets and allergies call for more frequent cleaning, so aim for the early end of each window.
How It Sounds at Home
- "Dust flew everywhere when I turned the fan on."
- "Grab an old pillowcase, I'm doing the fans."
- "The bedroom fan's wobbling again."
The Breakdown
How often, per Hunter Fan
| Job | How often |
|---|---|
| Dust the blades | Every 1 to 3 months |
| Deeper clean | Every 3 to 6 months |
| Kitchen fan, pets or allergies at home | More often than the above |
| Check screws and mounting hardware | Every few months; twice a year in busy rooms |
The pillowcase method
- Turn the fan off and make sure the light isn't hot.
- Lay an old sheet over furniture underneath.
- Slide a pillowcase longer than the blade over it, open end first.
- Draw it back toward you with light pressure, so the dust stays inside.
- For grease or thick dust, dampen the pillowcase or lightly spray a gentle cleaner inside it.
- Shake the pillowcase out outdoors, then wash it.
Make it last between cleanings. Buhata's suggestion: pair the fan with the monthly dusting of the room and work from the top down, so dust that falls from the blades gets picked up with everything else.
Good to Know
Go gently. Hunter Fan warns that pressing too hard on the blades can break them or knock them out of balance, and that uneven dust can do the same over time. If a fan starts to wobble, Hunter says tightening or replacing loose screws and mounting parts can help steady it. Use a stable step stool or ladder and keep the fan switched off the whole time (Buhata's suggestion).
