FAQ

How much does a year of college cost?

College Board's 2025-26 averages for a full student budget are $21,320 at a public two-year college, $30,990 at a public four-year college for in-state students and $65,470 at a private nonprofit four-year college. Your own cost depends on the school and the aid you receive.

What is the difference between tuition and the cost of college?

Tuition and fees pay for classes. The full cost adds housing, food, books, supplies, transportation and personal costs, which is why the 2025-26 public four-year in-state budget of $30,990 is far above its $11,950 tuition.

Do most students pay the sticker price?

Many pay less because of grants and scholarships. College Board estimates that first-time full-time students at private nonprofit four-year colleges paid $16,910 in net tuition and fees on average in 2025-26, against a published average of $45,000.
