Where It Comes From

Britannica credits Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington. Her father, a Civil War veteran, raised her and her five siblings after their mother died in childbirth, and in 1909, listening to a Mother's Day sermon, she had the idea of a day for fathers. The first was held on June 19, 1910, in June because it was her father's birth month. Calvin Coolidge backed it in 1924, Lyndon B. Johnson recognized it by proclamation in 1966, and Richard Nixon signed it into law as a national holiday in 1972.

Good to Know

Father's Day moves each year because it's tied to a Sunday rather than a date, so check the calendar before booking a restaurant or a trip. The table above lists the next three dates.
