Gutter guards

Covers, screens or inserts fitted to a roof gutter to keep leaves and debris out while letting rain through, so the gutter needs clearing less often.

What It Means

Gutter guards are covers, mesh screens or inserts that sit on or inside a roof gutter. Rain runs through or around them while most leaves and twigs stay out, so less debris builds up in the channel. LeafFilter, which makes gutter guards, says they cut down how often gutters need cleaning, and that no guard makes a gutter maintenance-free.

Try It: How Often to Check Guarded Gutters

Pick the kind of guard and tick what fits your house. The advice comes from LeafFilter, a gutter guard maker.

Check the gutters

Once or twice a year

Most of the work is brushing debris off the top of the guard.

How It Sounds at Home

  • "We put guards on so we don't have to climb up every fall."
  • "The mesh on the front gutter is covered in seed pods."
  • "Do those foam inserts actually keep the leaves out?"

The Breakdown

How often, per LeafFilter

SituationCheck the guarded gutters
Typical houseOnce or twice a year, inspecting and cleaning as needed
Heavily wooded lot or trees close byMore often
Heavy rainfall or frequent stormsMore often
Brush or foam guardsAlso clean the inside of the gutter now and then

What the check looks like. On a cover or screen, most of the upkeep is clearing leaves, seed pods and grit off the top so rain can get through. LeafFilter notes that even fine-mesh guards collect a light layer of buildup over time, especially under heavy tree cover or high pollen. A brush or foam insert sits inside the channel, so debris can settle in the gutter itself as well as on top.

Make it last between checks. Buhata's own suggestion: during a heavy rain, look for water sheeting over the front of the gutter. That usually means the top of the guard is matted and needs clearing before the next storm.

OSHA's ladder guidance says to inspect the ladder first, set it on firm, level ground and keep three points of contact while climbing. FAQ

Do gutter guards need to be cleaned?

Yes, though less often than open gutters. LeafFilter says guarded gutters usually need an inspection and cleaning once or twice a year, and more often under heavy tree cover or in stormy areas.

Which gutter guards need the most upkeep?

LeafFilter says brush and foam guards, which sit inside the gutter, still need the inside of the gutter cleaned out now and then. Covers and screens mostly need their top surface cleared.

How can I tell guarded gutters need attention?

Buhata's own suggestion is to watch them in a heavy rain. Water pouring over the front edge instead of running down the downspoutsDownspoutThe vertical pipe that carries rainwater from a roof gutter down to the ground, ideally ending several feet away from the house's foundation. See more usually means the guard is clogged on top.
