Hybrid work

A work arrangement that splits the week between working from home and working at the employer's site, such as three office days and two at home.

What It Means

Hybrid work is an arrangement where an employee works some days at home and some at the employer's site, such as an office. The split is set by the employer or agreed with the team, for example Tuesday to Thursday in the office and Monday and Friday at home. See more data, the closest match is people who teleworked some of their hours in the survey week, as opposed to all of them.

Try It: Plan Your Office Days Around Your Team

Tick the days you're in the office and the days your team is in. Example schedules to start.

Days you overlap with your team2
Commuting hours a week3.5

You share at least two office days with your team, which leaves room for meetings in person.

How People Say It at Work

  • "We're hybrid, in the office Tuesday to Thursday."
  • "Is this role hybrid or fully remote?"
  • "Let's meet on an office day so we're all in the room."

The Breakdown

Worked example. One person's week under a Tuesday to Thursday office schedule, with a team that comes in Monday to Wednesday (example schedules):

DayYouYour team
MondayHomeOffice
TuesdayOfficeOffice
WednesdayOfficeOffice
ThursdayOfficeHome
FridayHomeHome

You're in the office three days and share two of them with your team. At 35 minutes each way, the three office days add 3.5 hours of commuting a week.

What the result means. The overlap count is the one to watch. Hybrid schedules that don't line up can leave people commuting in to sit on video calls with teammates at home, so it's worth agreeing on shared office days with the people you work with most.

Good to Know

Get the hybrid arrangement in writing: which days you're expected in, whether they can change, and who provides equipment for home days. BLS measures telework through the monthly Current Population Survey, which added telework questions in October 2022, so its telework figures start from that month.

FAQ

What does hybrid work mean?

It's a schedule that splits the working week between home and the employer's site, such as three days in the office and two at home. The exact days are set by the employer or agreed with the team.

How many people work hybrid?

BLS reports telework rather than hybrid work, and its closest measure is people who teleworked some of their hours. In April 2025 that was 11.0% of private industry workers, while another 9.8% teleworked all of their hours.

What's the difference between hybrid and remote work?

A remote worker does all their work away from the employer's site, while a hybrid worker splits the week between home and the site. In BLS data, that's the difference between teleworking all of your hours and some of them.
