What It Means
A personal loan is an installment loanInstallment loanA loan you receive as one lump sum and repay in a set number of scheduled payments, such as a car loan, mortgage or personal loan. See more that pays you a lump sum, which you repay in fixed monthly payments over a set term. Most personal loans are unsecured, meaning nothing you own backs them, so the lender prices the loan mainly from your credit and income. Experian says they generally run from $1,000 to $100,000 over one to seven years, and people use them for things such as combining credit card debt or covering a large one-time cost.

How People Say It

- "They approved me, but the fee came out of the loan."
- "It's a three-year loan with a fixed payment."
The Breakdown
Worked example. You're approved for $1010,000 stepsA popular daily step goal that began as the name of a 1960s Japanese pedometer; later studies find health benefits begin well below it. | Amount | |
|---|---|
| Loan amount you repay | $10,000.00 |
| Fee taken out (5%) | $500.00 |
| Money you receive | $9,500.00 |
| Monthly payment | $332.14 |
| Total repaid over 36 months | $11,957.15 |
| Cost of borrowing (fee plus interestInterest rateThe yearly percentage a lender charges for borrowing money, not counting fees; the APR adds certain fees to show a fuller cost. See more) | $2,457.15 |
What the result means. The fee is paid up front but repaid with interest over the whole term, which is why the APR on an offer with a fee sits above its interest rate. If you need the full $10,000 in hand, you'd have to borrow more. Comparing offers by APR and by the total repaid puts a no-fee loan and a lower-rate loan with a fee on the same footing.

FAQ
Is a personal loan secured or unsecured?
Most are unsecured, so no collateral is needed and the lender relies on your credit and income. Experian notes that this is part of why personal loan rates can run high for borrowers with weaker credit.
What is an origination fee on a personal loan?
A charge for setting up the loan, usually a percentage of the amount borrowed. Experian says it's often deducted from the money you receive, so a $10,000 loan with a 5% fee pays out $9,500.
How long can a personal loan last?
Experian says terms generally run from one to seven years. A longer term lowers the payment and raises the total interest.
