What It Means
A self-cleaning oven has a built-in cycle that heats the empty oven far hotter than cooking does, breaking down baked-on food so the leftover residue can be wiped out after it cools. Makers such as Whirlpool, Maytag and KitchenAid call it the High Temperature Self-Clean cycle. It replaces chemical oven cleanerOven cleaningRemoving baked-on grease and food from inside an oven, by hand or with the oven's own cleaning cycle, which KitchenAid suggests once or twice a year for most homes. See more for that oven, and GE Appliances says commercial oven cleaner should never be used in or around one.
Try It: Ready to Run the Self-Clean Cycle?
Tick each step before you start the cycle. The list comes from Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid and GE Appliances; your own manual comes first.
All six done. Start the cycle as your manual describes.
Finish the list first.
Makers warn that the fumes from this cycle can kill some birds.
How It Sounds at Home
- "I'm running the self-clean tonight, open a window."
- "Take the racks out before you start it."
- "The whole house smells like the oven's cleaning itself."
The Breakdown
How often
| Situation | Run it | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Average use, big spills wiped as they happen | Once or twice a year | KitchenAid |
| Daily cooking, or more than average | Four to five times a year | KitchenAid |
| Before every cycle | Wipe out loose soil and clean the window glass | Whirlpool family of brands; GE Appliances |
Before you start
- Read the self-clean section of your oven's manual.
- Remove racks, the broiler pan, cookware, bakeware and any foil. Some models have dark, enameled self-clean racks that can stay in; the manual says which.
- Wipe out loose soil with a damp cloth to cut down on smoke.
- Clean the oven window, since soil left on the glass can leave dark streaks.
- Air out the kitchen and keep the oven vents clear.
- Move any pet birds to another closed room with good ventilation.
Make it last between cycles. KitchenAid's lower count assumes big spills get wiped up once the oven cools, and the makers note that wiping out loose soil before a cycle cuts the smoke.
Good to Know
Whirlpool, Maytag and KitchenAid warn that some birds are extremely sensitive to the fumes from a self-clean cycle and that exposure can kill them, so birds go to a closed, well-ventilated room away from the kitchen. The kitchen itself should be well ventilated during the cycle to clear heat, odor and smoke, with nothing blocking the oven vents. GE Appliances says no commercial oven cleaner, even one labeled for self-clean ovens, should be used in or around any part of a self-cleaning oven.
FAQ
How often should you run the self-clean cycle?
KitchenAid suggests cleaning an oven once or twice a year for most households, and four to five times a year with daily or heavy use. Your oven's manual may add its own guidance.
Do you take the racks out before self-cleaning?
Usually yes. Makers say to remove racks, the broiler pan, cookware and foil, though some models have enameled self-clean racks that can stay in; the manual says which kind you have.
Is a self-cleaning oven safe with pet birds?
Oven makers warn it isn't safe for birds to breathe the fumes. Whirlpool, Maytag and KitchenAid say to move birds to another closed, well-ventilated room during the cycle.
