Where It Comes From

The Sprint Goal comes from the Scrum Guide by Ken Schwaber and Jeff Sutherland. Its 2020 edition, per Scrum.org's summary, made it the commitment attached to the Sprint Backlog and added "why is this Sprint valuable" as the first question of Sprint Planning.

Good to Know

The 2020 Scrum Guide says changes that would put the Sprint Goal at risk are not made during the Sprint, and scope is renegotiated with the Product Owner instead. If the goal itself stops making sense, only the Product Owner can cancel the Sprint.

FAQ

What is a Sprint Goal in Scrum?

The single objective for one Sprint, agreed by the whole Scrum Team at Sprint Planning. The Developers commit to it, and it guides every choice about which work to do.

Can the Sprint Goal change during a Sprint?

Under the 2020 Scrum Guide, the team avoids changes that would endanger it and adjusts the task list instead. If the goal becomes pointless, the Product Owner can cancel the Sprint.

What's the difference between a Sprint Goal and a Product Goal?

A Sprint Goal covers one Sprint. The Product Goal, added in the 2020 Scrum Guide, is the longer-term objective for the product, and each Sprint should move the team toward it.
