Tipping house cleaners

Giving a house cleaner extra money beyond the price of the service, either at visits or once a year, which is a choice with no official rule.

What It Means

Tipping house cleaners means giving the person or crew who cleans your home some extra money on top of what the service costs. People do it at each visit, once a year around the holidays, or both. No law or official body sets an amount, so the figures you'll see are etiquette guidelines, and the Emily Post Institute says they bend to your region and your budgetBudgetA plan for a set period, usually a month, that lists the money you expect to receive and how you'll spend or save it. Try It: Work Out a Tip for Your Cleaners

Put in your price and crew. The tip percentage is your own choice; 10% is only an example.

Tip per visit$15.00Each person: $7.50
Per-visit tips over a year$390
Holiday tip, up to$150Each person: $75.00

The holiday figure is the Emily Post Institute's suggestion for regular cleaners: up to the cost of one cleaning, split among the crew.

If you already tip at every visit, Emily Post says a smaller holiday thank-you, or none, is fine.

How It Sounds at Home

  • "How much do you tip the cleaners at Christmas?"
  • "I leave an envelope on the counter for them."
  • "Is the tip split between the two of them?"

The Breakdown

Worked example. A household pays $150 a cleaning, a crew of two comes every two weeks (26 visits a year), and they choose to tip 1010,000 stepsA popular daily step goal that began as the name of a 1960s Japanese pedometer; later studies find health benefits begin well below it. Amount
Tip per visit (10% of $150)$15.00, or $7.50 each
Per-visit tips over a year$390
Holiday tip, Emily Post's upper guideUp to $150, or $75 each

Since this household already tips every visit, Emily Post's guide says they could give a smaller holiday thank-you or skip it.

What moves the number

  • Whether you tip at each visit, at the holidays, or both (Buhata's note)
  • How often the cleaners come, which multiplies any per-visit tip (Buhata's note)
  • Your region's customs and your own budget, which Emily Post names as reasons amounts vary
  • Whether the person works for you full time: for full-time household staff, the Emily Post Institute's holiday guide suggests one week to one month of pay as a cash tip, plus a gift

What the result means. The yearly total shows what your tipping habit adds to the cost of the service, so it can go in your budget alongside the cleaning itself.

Good to Know

There's no official rule for tipping house cleaners, and no government body sets one. The Emily Post Institute presents its figures as guidelines and says you shouldn't feel you have to go beyond your budget; it treats holiday tipsHoliday tippingA year-end tip or gift for people who provide regular services, such as a babysitter, cleaner or newspaper carrier, guided by etiquette rather than any rule. See more and gifts as optional unless a written contract says otherwise. When a crew comes, its suggestion for a holiday tip, up to the cost of one cleaning, is split among the people who clean.
