Braces cost

What orthodontic treatment with braces costs a family, set by each orthodontist and often paid as a down payment plus monthly payments over 12 to 24 months.

What It Means

Braces cost is the total an orthodontist charges for straightening teeth with braces, from the first records to the end of active treatment. The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) says the price depends on the kind of treatment, how complex the case is and how long it lasts, so the only reliable number is the quote from your orthodontist. Orthodontists' payment plans usually take part up front and spread the rest over monthly payments, and dental insurance or a health savings or flexible spending accountFlexible spending accountAn account through your employer that lets you set aside pretax pay for eligible medical costs; for 2026 you can put in up to $3,400, mostly spent within the plan year. See more can cover part of it.

Try It: Turn a Braces Quote Into a Monthly Payment

Enter the quote from your orthodontist and your plan's benefit. The starting numbers are examples.

Your share$3,500
Left after the down payment$2,500
Monthly over 18 months$138.89

Assumes an interest-free plan, which the AAO says most member orthodontists who offer plans provide. Ask whether yours charges interest or fees.

How People Say It at Work

  • "The orthodontist wants a thousand down and the rest monthly."
  • "Insurance only covers part of the braces."
  • "We're paying the braces off over two years."

The Breakdown

No national price. The AAO's pages on cost don't give a typical price for braces; they tie the cost to the type of treatment, its complexity and its length. Get a written quote, and get a second one if the first is hard to follow.

How the AAO says families usually pay

  • A down paymentDown paymentThe share of a home's price you pay upfront in cash when you buy it; the mortgage covers the rest. See more to start treatment
  • Monthly payments for the rest, usually over 12 to 24 months and often with no interestInterest rateThe yearly percentage a lender charges for borrowing money, not counting fees; the APR adds certain fees to show a fuller cost. See more
  • Dental insurance, which may pay a percentage of the treatment or a fixed amount, and more often for children under 18 than for adults
  • Money from a health savings accountHealth savings accountA tax-advantaged account for medical costs, open to people with an HSA-eligible health plan, where money goes in, grows and comes out for care without federal income tax. See more (HSA) or flexible spending account (FSA), which is pre-tax

In an AAO survey of its member orthodontists, 97% of those who answered offered payment plans, and 90% of those plans carried no interest or financing fees.

Worked example. An example quote of $5,000, an insurance benefit of $1,500 and a $1,000 down payment:

LineAmount
Quote minus insurance$3,500
Minus the down payment$2,500 left
Over 18 months, no interestabout $138.89 a month
Over 24 months, no interestabout $104.17 a month

What moves the number. The type of braces or aligners, how complex the bite is, how long treatment runs, your insurance benefit and whether the plan you pick charges interest.

Good to Know

Ask your dental plan how its orthodontic benefit pays out before you sign, since the AAO says plans differ and coverage for adults is less common than for children. When you compare two quotes, check what each one includes, such as retainers after treatment.

FAQ

How much do braces cost?

The AAO's pages give no national price; they say cost depends on the type of treatment, how complex it is and how long it takes. Your orthodontist's written quote is the number to plan around.

Do orthodontists offer payment plans?

Most do. In an AAO survey of member orthodontists, 97% of respondents offered payment plans and 90% of those charged no interest or financing fees, usually with a down payment and then 12 to 24 monthly payments.

Does dental insurance cover braces?

Sometimes. The AAO says a plan may pay a percentage of treatment or a fixed benefit, and orthodontic coverage is more common for children under 18 than for adults. HSA and FSA money can also go toward braces.
