MAP test

NWEA's MAP Growth, a computer-adaptive test schools give a few times a year to measure growth in reading, math and other subjects on a scale called RIT.

What It Means

The MAP test usually means MAP Growth, a test from NWEA that schools give to track how a student's skills grow across a school year. It's computer-adaptive: when your child answers a question correctly the next one gets harder, and when they miss one the next gets easier. Scores come out on NWEA's RIT scale, which runs the same way from grade to grade, so a fall score and a spring score can be compared directly.

  • "They have MAP testing next week, so early bedtime."

Because RIT scores can be compared across grades and testing terms, the change from one window to the next is how growth shows up.

Subjects. Reading and math are the core, with language usage and science also available.

Reading a RIT score. RIT is an equal-interval scale with a possible range of 100 to 350. Because it means the same thing in every grade, it's built for comparing your child's own scores over time. NWEA's "What does my RIT score mean?" page lets you look up a score; ask the teacher too, since they see the full report.

When to talk to the teacher. If scores stay flat across a year, or drop sharply from one test to the next, ask what the teacher sees in class.
