Kindergarten readiness

How prepared a child is for kindergarten, in social, emotional, language, thinking and physical skills, alongside meeting their state's entry age.

What It Means

Kindergarten readiness has two parts. One is the legal entry age: most US states require a child to be 5 by a cutoff date set in state law, and those dates differ from state to state. The other is how ready a child is for the classroom, which the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) describes in terms of communication, listening, getting along with others, toileting and physical skills as well as early learning.

Try It: Work Out Your Child's Age on a Cutoff Date

Enter your child's birth date and your state's cutoff date. The sample dates are an example; check the real cutoff with your state or district.

Not yet 5 on this date. Check your state for waivers, early entry or transitional kindergarten.

How Parents Say It

  • "Her birthday is two weeks after the cutoff."
  • "Is he ready, or should we wait a year?"
  • "The school has a kindergarten screening in the spring."

The Breakdown

Worked example with a September 1 cutoff (an example date; states set their own)

Birth dateAge on September 1, 2026Turns 5 by then?
August 20, 20215 years, 0 monthsYes
September 1, 20215 years, 0 months (the birthday itself)Yes, if the rule says "on or before"
October 15, 20214 years, 1010,000 stepsA popular daily step goal that began as the name of a 1960s Japanese pedometer; later studies find health benefits begin well below it. See more monthsNo

The calculator counts whole months, so a child whose birthday falls on the cutoff date reads as exactly 5. States word their rules differently, so read the exact wording before relying on a birthday that lands close to the date.

What the result means. Age only settles whether your child may enroll. For readiness, HealthyChildren.org, the AAP's parenting site, suggests looking at how your child communicates and listens, gets along with other children and adults, handles toileting, and uses physical skills such as running or holding a crayon. It says social, emotional and behavior skills matter as much as academic ones.

Skills most children have by 4, from CDC. CDC's 4-year checklist includes comforting others who are hurt or sad, liking to be a helper, and changing behavior depending on where they are, like a library or a playground. Each milestone sits where 75% or more of children have it.

When to talk to the doctor or school. If you're unsure whether your child is ready, ask the pediatrician at the 4- or 5-year checkup and talk with the school or district. CDC recommends raising any concern about how your child plays, learns, speaks, acts or moves with the doctor.

Good to Know

Kindergarten entry age is state law. The Education Commission of the States (ecs.org) keeps 50-state comparisons of K-3 policies, including entrance cutoff dates and age waivers, and notes that some states leave the entrance age to local districts. Your state's department of education or your school district has the rule for your child, including any early entry or waiver process. The AAP's school readiness advice says a kindergarten screening should help schools plan teaching rather than act as a gate that keeps children out.
