What It Means
Kindergarten registration is the step of enrolling your child with your public schoolPublic schoolA school run by publicly elected or appointed officials and paid for mainly with public money, including district, charter and magnet schools. See more district for their first year of kindergarten. Each state sets the age a child must reach by a cutoff date, and the district sets the registration dates and the paperwork it asks for, which commonly includes proof of age, proof of where you live, and immunization and other health records. A family experiencing homelessness has a federal right to enroll a child right away, even without those documents.

Enter the birth date and your state's cutoff. This assumes a rule of "5 on or before the cutoff date"; the sample dates are an example, so check your state's wording.

How Parents Say It
- "Kindergarten registration opens in February."
- "I need a utility bill for proof of address."
- "Her birthday is right after the cutoff, so she starts next year."
The Breakdown
Worked example with a September 1 cutoff (an example date; your state sets its own)
| Birth date | Turns 5 | First kindergarten fall |
|---|---|---|
| August 20, 2021 | August 20, 2026 | Fall 2026 |
| September 1, 2021 | September 1, 2026 | Fall 2026, under an "on or before" rule |
| October 15, 2021 | October 15, 2026 | Fall 2027 |
What the result means. The year shown is the first fall your child meets the age rule, so registration falls in the months before it, on dates the district sets. If your state words its rule differently, such as "before" rather than "on or before", a birthday on the cutoff date itself can fall the other way. In California, a child who turns 4 by September 1 can start transitional kindergartenTransitional kindergartenCalifornia's free first year of a two-year kindergarten program, open to every child who turns 4 by September 1 of the school year, from 2025-26. Getting the paperwork ready. Schools commonly ask for proof of age, proof of residence, and immunization and other health records. Buhata's suggestion: gather them a month before registration opens, and keep copies.
If you don't have the documents. Under the federal McKinney-Vento Act, a child experiencing homelessness must be enrolled right away, kindergarten included, even without those records and even after a deadline has passed; the school gets the records while the child attends.

FAQ
When should I register my child for kindergarten?

See more, proof of residence, and immunization and other health records. Your district's list is the one that counts.
Can my child start school without a birth certificate or proof of address?
