Words of affirmation

One of Gary Chapman's five love languages: showing love through spoken or written words, such as specific compliments, thanks and encouragement.

What It Means

Words of affirmation is one of the five love languagesLove languagesGary Chapman's idea that people give and feel love in five main ways: words of affirmation, quality time, receiving gifts, acts of service and physical touch. See more in Gary Chapman's book "The 5 Love Languages." It means expressing love and appreciation out loud or in writing: a compliment nobody asked for, a thank-you, a note saying why you love someone. Chapman's official site says that for people who value this most, hearing the reasons behind "I love you" matters as much as the words themselves. The model is Chapman's, and it's a way to think about connection rather than clinical guidance.

Try It: Turn Generic Praise Into Words That Land

Each card starts with a generic line. Open it for a more specific version, the kind that tells your partner exactly what you noticed. Buhata's examples.

"Thanks for dinner."

"Thanks for making soup after your long shift. I know you were wiped out."

"You're a great parent."

"The way you stayed calm during that meltdown today was amazing to watch."

"You look nice."

"That color is great on you. You look really happy today."

"Good job at work."

"I'm proud of how you spoke up in that meeting. That took nerve."

The pattern: name what they did, and say why it mattered to you.

How It Sounds at Home

  • "Just tell me you noticed. That's all I need."
  • "She left a note on the mirror and it made my week."
  • "I'm a words of affirmation person, so say it out loud."

The Breakdown

Signs words of affirmation matter to someone

  • They keep cards, texts or notes.
  • A sincere compliment visibly lifts their mood.
  • Harsh words or sarcasm sting for a long time.
  • They often praise and thank the people around them.

A quick self-check. Count the specific, positive things you said to your partner yesterday. A specific one names what they did and why it mattered ("thanks for handling the landlord call, that saved me an hour of stress"). If the count is zero or the words were general, try one specific line a day this week.

What makes words land. Be specific, be sincere, and say it when nobody's keeping score. Words written down can be reread later, so a text or a note on the fridge works as well as saying it.

A way to start the conversation. "I realized I don't tell you enough what I appreciate about you. Can I start now? The way you handled your mom's call today was really kind."

Where It Comes From

Dr. Gary Chapman, a marriage counselor, set out the five love languages in "The 5 Love Languages." His official site, 5lovelanguages.com, describes words of affirmation as the language where compliments and the reasons behind "I love you" mean the most.

Good to Know

A 2024 review by Impett, Park and Muise in Current Directions in Psychological Science, "Popular Psychology Through a Scientific Lens," found little strong support for the idea that people have one preferred love language or that matching languages makes couples happier, and found people tend to appreciate all five. Kind, specific words are worth saying to anyone you love, whatever their "type." If words at home are mostly critical or cruel, that's worth raising with a licensed couples therapist.
