Occupational therapy
Therapy that helps a child do the everyday activities of childhood, such as playing, learning, eating, dressing and sleeping, by building skills or adapting the task.
OKRs
Objectives and Key Results: a goal-setting method that pairs a clear objective with a few measurable results showing whether it was reached, usually set each quarter.
One-on-one meeting
A regular private meeting between a manager and one person who reports to them, used for check-ins, feedback, problems and career growth.
Online safety for kids
The habits, rules and tools that help children use the internet, apps and games while avoiding harm such as scams, cruelty, and adults who try to exploit them.
Open enrollment
The yearly window when you can sign up for, change or drop health insurance and other benefits, set by your employer for job-based plans.
Open-ended play
Play with toys or materials that have no single right way to use them, like blocks, boxes or playdough, so the child decides what they become.
Opportunity cost
The value of the next-best option you give up when you make a choice, whether the thing given up is money, time or something else.
Out-of-network
Describes a provider that has no contract with your health plan, so the plan pays less or nothing for the care and you may be billed more.
Out-of-pocket maximum
The most you pay in a plan year for covered in-network care through deductibles, copays and coinsurance, after which the plan pays covered benefits in full.
Oven cleaning
Removing baked-on grease and food from inside an oven, by hand or with the oven's own cleaning cycle, which KitchenAid suggests once or twice a year for most homes.
Overdraft
When a payment is bigger than your checking balance and the bank pays it anyway, leaving a negative balance you owe back, usually plus a fee.
Overdraft fee
The flat charge a bank adds each time it pays a transaction your checking account couldn't cover, on top of the negative balance you repay.
Overdraft protection
A bank service that covers a checking shortfall, either by moving money from a linked account or by paying the item and charging an overdraft fee.
Overseeding
Spreading grass seed over an existing lawn, without tearing it out, to thicken thin turf or, on bermudagrass, to add ryegrass for winter.
Overstimulation
The overwhelmed, keyed-up feeling when noise, light, crowds, smells or touch add up to more than your senses can comfortably take in.
Oxygen bleach
Laundry bleach that uses hydrogen peroxide or a similar oxygen-releasing ingredient instead of chlorine, sold as color-safe or non-chlorine bleach.
