Name it to tame it
Dr. Dan Siegel's phrase for calming a strong feeling by putting it into words, naming the emotion out loud or on paper so it feels more manageable.
Nanny salary
What a family pays a nanny, usually quoted by the hour or week. Care.com's 2026 report puts the US average at $21.75 an hour for one child.
Nanny share cost
What each family pays when two families share one nanny, which Care.com puts at about two-thirds of the cost of a nanny of your own.
Nanny tax
The federal employment taxes a family owes when it pays a nanny or other household employee enough cash wages in a year, reported on Schedule H.
Nap schedule
The usual pattern of a baby's or toddler's daytime naps: how many, roughly when and for how long, which shifts as the child grows.
Nap transition
The stretch when a child drops a daytime nap, such as going from three naps to two, from two to one, or from one to none.
Natural consequences
The result that follows a child's choice on its own, with no adult arranging it, such as a thrown toy that breaks and can't be played with.
Needs vs wants
The split between costs you must pay to live, work and protect what you have (needs) and extras that would be nice to have (wants).
Negative equity
Owing more on a loan than the thing it paid for is worth, most often a car loan balance that's higher than the car's value.
Negative self-talk
The harsh, critical or gloomy things you say to yourself in your head, such as "I always mess this up," often out of proportion to what happened.
Net income
What's left after everything is taken out: on a paycheck, pay after taxes and deductions; for a business, profit after all expenses and taxes.
Net worth
What you own minus what you owe: the value of your savings, investments, home and other assets, less your mortgage, loans and card balances.
Neurodivergent
A nonmedical word for a person whose brain develops or works differently from what's considered typical, as with autism, ADHD or a learning disability.
New Year's resolutions
Goals a person sets at the start of a new year to change a habit, learn something or improve their health, money or relationships.
Newborn
A baby in the first 28 days of life, the stage doctors also call the neonatal period.
Night terrors
Episodes in which a sleeping child suddenly screams, thrashes or looks terrified without really waking, usually early in the night, and has no memory of it later.
No-spend challenge
A set stretch of time, often a month, when you spend only on essentials like housing, groceries, bills and transportation, and cut everything else.
No-spend day
A day when you spend nothing beyond essentials and bills already scheduled, often picked as one day a week to build the habit.
Nonviolent communication
Marshall Rosenberg's method for talking through conflict by stating an observation, a feeling, a need and a clear request, without blame.
Note-taking methods
The common ways to lay out notes from a class, meeting or reading, such as the Cornell, outline, mapping, charting and sentence methods.
Number sense
A child's growing feel for numbers: knowing how many are in a small group, counting objects one by one, and knowing the last number counted is the total.
